E-MAIL - OVERVIEW

When E-Mail is sent from one person to another there must be an "ADDRESS" used by both the sender and the receiver.

This E-mail address can be an e-mail address provided by an ISP (Internet Service Provider) like XTRA or CLEAR. In most cases it would be similar to:

companyname@xtra.co.nz

or
companyname1@xtra.co.nz

An E-Mail address though could be a name supplied by a third party like HOTMAIL or YAHOO in which case it will look something like this:

tombrown1@hotmail.com

or
sunshinegirl@yahoo.com

These are normally the mailboxes from which you will collect your e-mail.

DOMAIN NAMES

For a business however it is more common to purchase a Domain Name and to use it for e-mail addresses. The format of this e-mail address is normally:

info@companyname.co.nz
or
william@companyname.co.nz

The primary purpose of using a Domain Name is for security and permanency. If you used an address at an ISP and you wished to change your ISP in the future, you would have to reprint business cards, letterheads and so on. However if you own your own Domain Name, then the Domain Name manager can simply redirect your mail to another ISP mailbox at a moment's notice.

Obviously you need a Domain Name to have your own website, and it is common for businesses to use the purchase of a domain name for a website as the time to change over to the new e-mail addresses.

At this point you may have existing customers or friends using the old ISP address, and new contacts using the Domain Name address. This is quite OK, as the old ISP address will continue to work in the same manner as it always has. (Until you change your ISP - of course!). In time however as you reprint your business cards and advise your contacts of your new Domain Name E-Mail address, everyone should be using the new address.

ALIASES

An E-Mail Alias is simply a NAME in front of the "@" symbol in your E-Mail address. For example "info" and "william" are the aliases in the two E-Mail addresses above.

Go Kiwi Internet offers UNLIMITED aliases to all clients. You can have ANYTHING YOU LIKE as an alias. Furthermore, because we provide a BLANKET REDIRECTION (also called a WILDCARD or CATCHALL) into your Domain Name configuration you can create an alias anytime you like without having to call your ISP, or without having to refer to us or without having to pay any extra!

You may want to create a new alias for every staff member (e.g. tom@, tomp@, tompotare@ etc) or for a particular role within your company (e.g. sales@, salesmanager@, production@, ceo@ etc).

E-Mail to all unspecified aliases is simply directed into your normal ISP Mailbox.

MULTIPLE MAILBOXES

In some mid-sized companies you may have multiple mailboxes (These are normally setup by your ISP). Typically this is the company that has more than one staff receiving their own e-mail but there is currently no inhouse E-Mail Server. Sometimes you may have two mailboxes - perhaps one for personal and one for business, or one for home and one for work.

You could even have one mailbox at one ISP and another at a different ISP.

In these cases you may want to have certain aliases sent to specific mailboxes.

tomp@companyname.co.nz
   goes to companyname1@xtra.co.nz
fredj@companyname.co.nz
   goes to companyname2@xtra.co.nz
tompotare@companyname.co.nz
   goes to tompotare@hotmail.com
etc
If this is the case, you should simply advise Blue Design Websites by e-mail of your required redirections, so that e-mail will continue to be received by the correct mailboxes.

Please note that Blue Design Websites does not provide any Mailbox nor provide any Internet Connectivity. We simply manage the "back end" configuration to your Domain Name, Website and E-Mail.
